Description

This is quite a rare model being a 1939 AJS model 9, which is a 500cc side valve single. It is sort of the civilian equivalent at the time of perhaps the BSA M20 or the Norton 16H in that it is a 500cc side valve which essentially would have been a go to work machine or ideal sidecar tug. But this is much more rare than the other two mentioned as you do see those for sale, but very rare to see the AJS equivalent on the market. So, this machine comes with a current V5C, is on its original registration number, which is transferable, and I am told moderately valuable...being FLF 708. This is a London reg issued from December 1938 on-wards and this machine was registered in January 1939. It is classed as historic so is tax and MOT exempt at this age. The file reveals that the Mag has been overhauled very recently, that is a brand new Amal carb fitted, and the front mudguard is also a new item. As a result of these two items, the bike starts up easily within a couple of kicks and runs pretty good, no undue noise or smoke and regular oil return to the tank. The motor sounds great. The petrol tank is an original item, not repro and you can see from the close ups that there is a host of original features here including the panel equipment, the very nice correct original Bowden levers, the original Lucas tail light and so on. This machine is half restored and half original, so a really tricky decision which way to go next. It does need wiring up to complete. It has an original Smiths chronometric clock fitted and a lovely, correct original Lucas eight inch headlamp up front with fluted glass. The original speedo drive is in the front brake plate, and is just missing a cable to make the speedo work. There's lots going on with this bike because this is the ultimate ride or restore challenge. It runs great, so do you use as is??? or do you rip into it to make mint??? very difficult to decide where to go with this. Despite this being a bread and butter model rather than perhaps one of the more sporty models, I think this bike has a lot of class and charm. Superb big chrome tank and headlamp, lovely bars, lots of nice feature, what a great pre war bike. I understand the forks have been overhauled as well and they do feel very good and bounce up and down nicely. The eagle eyed will also have spotted that the front wheel has been re-spoked etc, so all the work that has gone on has really been remedial/ urgent works. Viewing is welcome. 07718 593259. Collection is preferred, although I can arrange for delivery within the mainland UK by courier for £ 100. No Paypal or credit cards. The auction is to run. Given the machines age and condition I can only really offer this on the basis of requiring restoration and without reserve. On 20-Jun-20 at 09:52:32 BST, seller added the following information: To prevent more repeated questions: 1: yes the engine and frame number on the logbook does match the numbers on the machine. 2: No, the numbers are not identical, but looking at AJS engine and frame numbers from the late 1930s... it appears they were not throughout the range anyway, so the numbers I have appear to fall in with that year and do not appear to be out of line for that years production. 3: I do not know if the engine and frame left the factory together as there is nothing on file to confirm or deny this point. They could well have and there is nothing to lead me to suspect otherwise. 4: No, I will not release the engine and frame numbers. Anyone wishing to view the bike will be given sight of the logbook though and I am happy to confirm if the numbers fall within the right range of numbers for that model and that year if you wish to supply them. 5: The machine does not appear in the military order numbers from AJS for that year, so I assume it was always a civilian machine. The military did order some of this model, but with the 1940 year code, not 1939. I hope this helps.
