Description
I bought this bike in December 2019 as a project. It is running and the previous owner had it re commissioned by a mechanic, MOT'd by that person and this expires 3.9.20. It was tatty when I got it but not now !I have stripped the bike to the frame and engine, cleaned/ sprayed the frame. I have ridden the bike and it runs really well BUT the frame has a rust issue near the headstock and is leaking oil. I tried to have this repaired with the bike assembled but the professional welder I used says the bike has to go back to the frame to allow a good repair. (see photo for location). The reason is the frame will need to be rotated to weld properly and probably need some minor fabrication in that area. The part that is visible will need to be removed and refabricated afterward, as it is the tube under that which needs repairing. The oil is in the frame tube not the part that can be seen in the photo. In short this is 'all' that is required or another good frame sourced and the bike reassembled. I have not got the time, energy or enthusiasm to do it again, having done it once. I have enjoyed seeing the bike become very presentable again. In my opinion it would be a shame to break it down for parts. So it is sold as a project but pretty much a disassembly and reassembly after either - 1. a good repair to the frame 2. sourcing a good replacement frame. It was imported from the US in 1996 according to the V5. The V5 is in my name. Since I have owned it I have removed oil gauze filters and cleaned. Battery replaced. New Yamaha oil filter and pattern air filter. Motul quality oil run through the bike but will obviously need new oil after the repair or replacement frame. Inside of the tank is in very good condition and I have had the tank professionally resprayed and lacquered. It is a lovely, quality job that really finishes the bike off and suits the bike in my opinion. Good original exhaust and mudguards. Wheels repainted, discs good and repainted, pads good, tyres good, new chain, sprockets are good. Yamaha blue spot calliper fitted at some point. (these are usually fitted to an R6 I believe) This is very powerful and gives the bike modern braking efficiency. A great up grade. Fresh brake fluid front and rear. Some Yamaha genuine nuts and bolts replaced here and there. I cleaned the chrome mudguards and have clear lacquered them. Hammerite painted underneath. The front mudguard was dented slightly so I have filled the dent and sprayed that area silver (between the front forks) It looks good and tidy. There is no rust on the bike. Chain guard now gloss black due to chrome failing, again it suits the bike in my opinion. I have resprayed the side panels and tail part of the seat. This paint looks tidy but is not anywhere near the quality of the tank. It starts well, stops well and looks great. I have completed about 50 miles around the Romney Marsh and I'm really pleased with the outcome but obviously disappointed with the frame issue as I intended using the bike. The paint job seems to have 'hit the spot' judging by the comments I have been getting. The bike can be evolved and is very original and un molested. The electrical connections have all been cleaned and had electrical grease applied. These Yamaha's are very old school but in my opinion look great and already beginning to look a classic. It will not need MOT or tax again as it's 40 years old. It will have cost me money for sure, but renovating old bikes is rarely a money maker but a hobby, as most of us know. All work carried out was with a view to keeping it and using, not to sell on, so if it needed doing it was done. Buyer to collect from Dymchurch, Kent 10 minutes from the Channel tunnel. On 23-Jun-20 at 09:51:13 BST, seller added the following information: Just an up date. The mileage is showing 17937. I have checked the MOT history on the DVLA site. 2008 -16473, 2009 -16997, 2019 -17826. So the mileage seems accurate during the time it has been in the UK.( since 1996.)The winning bidder WILL be able to start the bike and ride it (if insured.) Obviously riding a bike is the only real way of checking it's OK I will fill the small leak with some liquid metal.I'd prefer that because I know it runs and rides well. STARTING. When I bought the bike I was worried about the reputation these big singles have to kick start. It really is easy and you just have to find 'top dead centre' using the indicator in the sight glass on the engine. Good kick down and she's away. Normal shoes etc. On 25-Jun-20 at 09:42:42 BST, seller added the following information: I was told by the welder that the repair might be possible by 'brazing'. This is a lower heat process and will build up the area that needs filling. The welder I used didn't have the equipment to braze but if you are a potential buyer and have that equipment and skill set, (or know someone who can) then a relatively straight forward repair with just the tank removed (potentially) What could possibly go wrong :-) On 26-Jun-20 at 09:41:09 BST, seller added the following information: I've added a you tube link of it running. https://youtu.be/hR0oXpiFjVYThis was it's first run out after I spent hours cleaning and painting parts. On 28-Jun-20 at 12:20:57 BST, seller added the following information: I added a photo of the front wheel and was trying to add more close ups. Hopefully this will show how tidy the bike is. I have had it running this morning, sounds good but with the weeping oil on the frame as already explained. I have more photos (taken this morning). my email is rynston@hotmail.co.uk.
