Description

Classic BMW R80g/s with a production date of early November 1980 and a serial number which designates that this machine is only the 744th GS produced from the initial genesis of the series which began some six months earlier. With a mileage of just over 20k and MOT’s dating back to 1998 which would support this mileage this is undoubtedly one for the collector’s. A full ‘nut & bolt’ restoration was conducted circa 2006 and the machine has done virtually no mileage since. I bought the bike in 2017 from a friend and I am familiar with the owner prior to this who himself acquired it from a relative who undertook the restoration. After a new battery was fitted the bike was coaxed into life but ran a little ‘lumpy’ probably due to the carbs requiring balancing. It was my intention to to undertake a couple of small jobs to make it ready for an MOT but time and apathy got the better of me and the bike has sat covered in my garage ever since. The battery was removed to avoid drainage and protectant oil was applied to the entire machine. The time has now come to move the bike on as space is required for another project. As can be seen in the pictures the original Krauser panniers come with the bike, as too does a new mudguard (original has some holes drilled in for an alternative mounting position), the original seat, spare side panel, new decal and replacement fork gaiters (originals perished) and a host of photographs and documentation showing the extent of the restoration. With a little time and effort this machine could be made ‘concours’ and will no doubt only appreciate significantly in value. The bike is located in Colwyn Bay, North Wales and I would expect any interested parties to inspect the bike before making a bid or offer. In hindsight it was probably a little naive of me to expect any interested parties to view the bike prior to bidding due to the current travel restrictions caused by Covid. As such, I have taken some more photographs of the bike which I have already sent to some of you and can forward to anyone else on request. To answer some of the more popular questions received thus far.... the bike has not been ridden on the road since my ownership. I took it up and down my drive a few times only reaching maybe 2nd or 3rd gear. The bike was ridden to and from the test centre by it’s previous owner in 2013 where a service was conducted at the same time, this will account for the 94 miles between the mileage on the certificate and the odometer reading now. Other than the fork gaiters needing replacing and probably the carbs requiring cleaning and balancing the only other job I would recommend doing before putting the bike back on the road would be to take off the fuel tank and clean out the inside. When I pumped out the fuel before laying the bike up I noted an amount of sediments in the bottom of the tank. Lastly, thank you for all the interest shown so far and the many questions sent over to me by obviously knowledgeable enthusiasts. I have received some reasonable offers above the start price but I’m inclined to let the auction run to its conclusions to see where we end up. If the bike doesn’t sell then so be it. It’s certainly increasing in value more than any other investment I hold during this current financial crisis!
