Description
N.B. TO THE TONS OF WATCHERS - I'M BEING ASKED UMPTEEN SIMILAR IMPOSSIBLE QUESTIONS AND UNFORTUNATELY WHEN I ANSWER THEY ARE NOT SHOWING IN MY AUCTION DETAILS (eBay are looking into why not for me!) So now I'm only answering sensible ones. **** The above was added by me Friday 26th 2:30 pm. **** 1979 HONDA CB400N Please note that all the chrome (which looks great in pics) is not too bad but definitely aged. I purchased this bike last October, sight unseen, on eBay. Between the Pictures, Description and phone conversation with the owner, it seemed to be just what I was after - ready to roll after slight re-commission servicing ....WRONG! I was told that it was originally a 1979 250, the frame had been Powder coated, but the owner wanted a bit more power so changed the engine for a 400 which had a top-end overhaul. Front brakes changed to Twin disc 400s. All legally done with updated V5. (unfortunately he'd sold the 250 engine - I did ask) After delivery I hadn't realised how heavy this model is and, at 73, it's very hard for me to manoeuvre around safely in the drive / garage. Obviously that was my problem, not the bikes. I therefore decided to set about giving it a general service and once-over in readiness to quickly move it on. The engine running was noisy and erratic so I did the oil and filter, changed the badly worn Carb inlet rubbers and clamps for new ones and balanced the carbs. Engine running still noisy but smoother I test rode it round the village but nearly lost my dentures! The forks had no movement so I set about overhauling them - completely stripped new seals and oil. They had presumably come straight from a breakers and fitted (changed for the brake update) and were full of crud. I set about the engine having to change the following parts...Rockers and Holders - usedTiming, Balance and Oil pump chains - newOil Filter Bolt + Washer - newGaskets and seals - newFitting new thread inserts into various stripped holes. Exhaust to Collector Box seals - newClutch cable - newVarious bolts, washers, circlips etc - new The unfortunate "Fly in the Ointment" was that as I was working on the engine I realised that it was a mongrel - the bottom end was from a late ('83) bike and the top end an earlier example. If you know these models (which I didn't) you'll know latterly there was an external oil feed from the front of the crankcase up to the camshaft area via the cylinder head - so the bottom had been blanked off because the top didn't have the connection. Whilst awaiting parts etc I added the following .....Detachable Top Box to existing Rack - newHorn - newGear link rubbers - newHeadlamp (original cracked) - usedHelmet/Seat lock and support Assy. - newTool Box Lid (under seat) - newBlack/Silver registration plate (legal) - new So we have a Super Dream which has just been given "historic" status and comes with - A Honda accessory fairing complete with functional retracting mirrorsA tilting Rear Carrier (to enable seat removal) with a new detachable Top box.Boxes of used spare parts BUT also an animal of an engine. Now, after 6 months, I've spent £430 extra on what I embarassingly paid initially (no, I'm not saying) What brave soul with the 'Mark' knowledge and access to suitable parts will take it on? PLEASE ASK ANY QUESTIONS BEFORE BIDDING. On 04-Jul-20 at 10:33:19 BST, seller added the following information: 4th JulyI keep being asked about the ability to "ride as is" or "what is the noise"I thought my extensive description answers this. I've listed it as a "PROJECT" and priced accordingly **** THIS IS NOT SUITABLE TO RIDE AS IS ONLY BECAUSE OF THE ENGINE **** If you have a spare engine (400 or 250) - drop it in and you've got a good bike.
