Description

1953 AJS 18S, good runner, original unrestored with V5C Here is a marvellous unrestored example of the AMC traditional big British single – the AJS 18S. A classic example of the Jampot 500 from one of the most favoured years of production. The bike has come through the years remarkably unscathed. It was apparently kept for many years as reserve transport when the original owner first bought a car. As it had decent compression and kicked over nicely I couldn’t resist getting it up and running once more. It only required the basics like fuel lines, carb clean out, points clean, fresh oil etc and the old girl fired up a treat, Even the charging system is working well. All lights work and the horn, only the rear brake light is not functioning due to seized switch and disconnected wire. The engine sounds very good, nice and crisp exhaust note. There is no smoke. Gearbox and clutch are OK, brakes are good. Speedometer is working well. Tyres, tubes & rim tapes have all been renewed. Avon MKII SM rear & budget Avon ribbed copy (SERVIS) front. There is a V5C with original registration JAW 859. (Cannot be transferred to another vehicle) The bike is not currently licensed but is eligible for Historic Class road tax and is MOT exempt. There is an AJS & Matchless Owners Club letter which stated the bike left the factory with current engine & frame 90815 & 53/18s 22437 on 22nd October 1952, bound for Shropshire dealers P.Moss Ltd of New St, Wem, Shrops. There is a May 1962 tax disc for the bike which may have been the last time it was on the road. As with all classic vehicles you should take speedometer mileage reading with a pinch of salt but the recorded mileage of 35,000 is certainly plausible. Cosmetically the bike is generally dull and faded all over. No shiny chrome (There wasn’t much chrome on 1953 models anyway) Good original seat (has been recovered but base is solid original and it’s very comfy! Exhaust is sound, silencer not as old as the bike but correct type! All in all this is a magical opportunity to own an unrestored unmolested easy starting sweet running 500cc Jampot AJS in amazing as found condition basically road – worthy subject to usual checks + that rear brake light repair!
