This auction is for a 1980 Yamaha DT175MX which has had six former keepers and, I should think, several rebuilds. When I purchased it the engine and frame numbers were identical and the previous keeper assured me that the engine had just been rebuilt with a brand new piston kit. What he did not tell me was that the piston was indeed brand new at 66.75mm (3rd oversize) whereas the cylinder was on its fifth bore at 67.25mm. Unsurprisingly compression was very poor. i did have a spare 2K4 engine so I put that in and have finally managed to get it running and it sounds fine.Unfortunately I have now overstretched my time and patience with this project and would prefer the room to the company. I do have the original short engine, which feels fine crankwise, but it is not included in the auction. Should you wish to retain it then it is available by seperate negotiation. The machine was first registered on 1/8/1980 so will be tax free in a couple of months.I will list the good and bad points that I am aware of;Bad bits;Fork stanchions are badly corroded at the top as the bike has odviously lived most of its life outside.The wiring loom is a "work of art" and does not seem to correspond to any of the diagrams that I have.The rear light unit is new and the wrong one.Clutch and front brake levers are wrong.Seat needs recovering.Mounting plate for speedometer, tachometer and ignition lock is missing. Clocks are present and are working but their condition is not great. Ignition lock is present with one ignition key. Both speedo and tacho cables are missing.Petrol tank has been filled and sprayed (badly) but it is not leaking.Good points;Frame and engine are MX examples .Both tyres are brand new.Air filter is brand new.Chain and sprockets are good.Exhaust pipe and silencer appear nearly new.V5C is present in my name. I have made no attempt to finish wiring up lights , horn etc.This machine makes an excellent project for someone with more time and patience than myself and will, when completed, provide an iconic motorcycle which will be free of road tax.
