Description

1957 BSA C12, 250cc Here is a lovely little BSA pre unit 250 in very good running order and nice all round cosmetic condition. The bike has been in regular use. These “proper little motorbikes” are great fun and well made. They are ideal for pottering around and having fun on the back lanes and quiet routes. Obviously they do not ‘pull up any trees’ performance wise but they are characterful and charming and sound great. This one starts very easily. Coil ignition and alternator electrics were big steps forward for the C11G model which preceded this swinging arm C12, but the engine is the same. The engine runs and responds very nicely, no smoke, no knocks or rattles but it does, as many of these models seem to, have something of an audible drone coming, I think, from the timing gears. The bike rides really well, handles and turns nicely, brakes well and pulls well through all four gears. Clutch is good too. Oil circulation good. Charging system is working correctly and balancing the lights out Ok on the original 6V set up. Smith’s 80mph chronometric speedometer is working well. The bike comes with a V5c document, date of registration 28th September 1957. Registration number is YFO 676 (cannot be transferred to another vehicle). Frame number is EC12.14678 and engine number is BC11G-38913, these numbers match the V5C doc and are believed to be the original pairing. Cosmetically the bike is very clean and tidy. Paintwork is generally all very good and has been done to a good standard, albeit a bit bright in my opinion. Frame has good enamel, tank and other tin-ware is all good. Chrome on sides on the tank is generally excellent although there is a patch in the chrome on the left side at the front. Tank is nice and clean internally and has not been linered. Wheels are very good, the rims having been re-chromed (centres unpolished), spokes front and rear are stainless. Tyres are both in excellent hardly used condition, Avon SM MKII ribbed front and Dunlop K70 rear. There is no fin damage on the engine and its oil tight. Side & centre stands are fitted and in good order. All in all this is a charming little, regularly used and ready use BSA 250. Easy to start, manoeuver and maintain. Not going to win any awards down the local café for performances along the bypass but just the ideal classic for an enjoyable potter around the leafy back-lanes this spring & summer.
