If you are reading this you are probably familiar with what these bikes are, they are smallest and lightest of the ‘K’ bikes, with the smoothest engine, and are plenty quick enough for modern day use. That said it is still a fairly big, substantial bike, I am not a big bloke and find it quite manageable, also it size makes it very comfortable and stable either solo or two up. The bike has around 75hp fuel injection and shaft drive, so it goes well and is great for covering distances. This particular bike is a nice, tidy, riding example; if you are looking for an immaculate show bike then it is probably not the one for you. That said it is tidy, shiny and presents well and, unlike more some newer bikes, you can ride it in all weathers without it dissolving before your eyes. When I got the bike it didn’t run, had damaged fairing and clocks, and also a leaking petrol tank. I obtained and fitted some replacement bodywork – the top fairing and radiator surround from a K75C (I prefer the look of bikes with less bodywork), another fuel tank and set of clocks. Serviced the engine and brakes, greased the shaft drive splines, fitted a new battery and rear tyre. I then got the bike MOT’d and taxed and rode it about for a summer, the bike was still in a variety of colours but I wanted to make sure it was reliable before I went to the expense of having it painted. Well, apart from a few minor issues which were easily fixed, it just rode like an old BMW – smooth, reliable, comfortable and surprisingly economical. At the time I had two other bikes, a modern BMW GS and an XBR 500 Honda, but most of the time when I wanted to use a bike, I took the K75. So when the winter came I removed the bodywork and had it all painted a BMW red, which was meant to be the same colour as the petrol tank I had fitted to the bike. Unfortunately it is a slightly different shade of red, not very different, but not the same – however it hasn’t bother me enough to get it rectified. Since then I have just used the bike and, other than normal, regular maintenance it is completely reliable. In fact I sold both of my other bikes and this is the only one I have now. I have had very enjoyable use from it on BMW and VMCC club runs without any trouble at all, which is pretty impressive for a bike that is over 30 years old. Of course during the last year or so all of the club-based motorcycling has been cancelled and I seem to have got out of the habit of riding a motorbike. I got the bike taxed, MOT’d and ready to use this year, but I just haven’t had the urge to actually go out on it. It is a shame for such a lovely bike to sit in the garage unused, so I have decided to sell it. The summer weather is currently lovely, lockdown rules have been lifted, so what better way to enjoy our new freedoms than with this lovely and very affordable motorcycle – you know it makes sense. The bike is kept at my home on Dartmoor in Devon and is to be collected from here, I am happy to help you, or your courier, load the bike into a van. Or I could collect you from Exeter railway station, and you could have a great ride home.
