Description

BSA A65 Lightning 1971Restoration Project This is a rare version of the classic BSA Lightning 650cc for export to the USA, featuring a smaller petrol tank and wider handlebars. I bought this BSA A65 in 2009. It was in full working order and roadworthy with a current MOT Certificate at the time. I used the bike on the road for a period of a few months. I then bought another BSA from a similar year and stopped using this motorbike. Since then it has been stored in a dry garage. As I do not intend to use this motorbike I am now selling it to free up space in my garage. The history of this BSA Lightning seems to be that it was exported to the USA in 1971 and then the frame and parts were re-imported to the UK in 2000 and restored for sale as a classic motorbike and registered in the UK in August 2003. I have some MOT certificates and other documents that confirm this record from 2000 to the present. These include some details of the restoration between 2000 and 2003 (including receipts and photographs) and all of these documents will be included in the sale. I have not used or run the bike since 2009. However, it is still in good condition but has some issues:1. The electrical system does not operate although I have tried a new fully charged battery and confirmed that the main fuse is OK2. There are some cosmetic problems with chrome in places, some very minor rust pitting to the exhaust pipes and some chrome peeling from the headlamp unit3. There is no current MOT Certificate and I have registered a SORN with DVLA4. The frame and engine numbers do not match, though I have a certificate by the BSA Owners Club confirming that the machine was dispatched to the USA on 26 March 1971 and is fitted with an engine of the same period. Frame and Engine numbers are as follows: Frame Number: CE 03459A65Engine Number: CE 05606A65L Documents available:1. Registration Certificate – KWJ 98J2. SORN Notices – V113. MOT Certificates4. Owners Handbook5. BSA Owners Club Dating Certificate 12/12/20006. Receipts for items purchased during restoration7. Photographs of progress during the restoration between 2000 and 2003 I have posted photographs from 2009 when I purchased the bike and some taken within the last few weeks after cleaning in 2020. Visits to inspect the motorcycle would be welcome or if requested I would be happy to provide any further information if it is available. The buyer will be responsible for collection or for transportation.
